Nearby

Lodève is a small market town 6km south, standing at the confluence of the rivers Lergue and Soulondres. It is known as the gateway to the Mediterranean and its history can be traced back to Nero, who minted coins here to pay the Roman legions. Visit the cathedral of St Fulcan and also the museum which is housed in the palace of Cardinal-de-Fleury and where regular, world class art exhibitions are held. You will find supermarkets here for general shopping.

East of Lodeve is the priory of St-Michel-de-Grandmont with Romanesque cloisters and dolmens in the grounds. To the west of Lodève is the cirque de Labeil, a natural amphitheatre forming the southern foothills of the Larzac plateau.

The European Buddhist centre, Lerab Ling, for followers of Sogyal Rinpoche, is within a 30 minute drive.

Montpellier is an impressive mix of old and new. There are narrow lanes full of boutiques and a new shopping area full of familiar shops. There are wonderful old buildings complimented by modern architecture all reached by a tram system that reduces road traffic and offers incredible value for money. It is bustling and vibrant and a perfect way to people watch is to sit at a café on the main square enjoying a coffee or light lunch.

Hérault is a very special corner of France. There is spectacular scenery with wooded hillsides which are green all year round. Fascinating rock formations sometimes seem sculpted or man made. Many of the villages have connections with the Knights Templar and are unspoilt. There are miles of wonderful mediterranean beaches and the villages and towns around the 'etang' or inland sea sell the freshest of shellfish.

Everywhere, there are miles of marked pathways for walkers of all abilities offering stunning vistas. Drive the hair-raising bends around the Cirque de Navacelles, the most impressive natural feature of the Vis Valley with the village of Navacelles nestling at the base of almost vertical walls of rock.
